This story is one of the two that were produced to highlight the city of Birmingham, Alabama and examine the city’s legacy, its problems, and the residents that are dedicated to solving them.

The Birmingham Sunlights, a traditional a cappella gospel group, has been around since the late ‘70s — but their musical art form stretches back generations. We chatted with the Sunlights about how Birmingham’s civil rights legacy is woven into their own, the significance of being cultural ambassadors and how they hope to pass their musicianship along to the next generation.

 

 

Peacemakers: Making Peace In Birmingham's Crossfire

This story is one of the two that were produced to highlight the city of Birmingham, Alabama and examine the city’s legacy, its problems, and the residents that are dedicated to solving them.

The Birmingham Peacemakers are a group of faith leaders and other volunteers working to stem gun violence. They do this by connecting with affected communities, responding to victims and assisting with grief counseling. We followed the Peacemakers (pre-pandemic) to learn more about their efforts and why they're asking the city for help.
